Arthritis is a term that literally means inflammation in a joint. There are over 100 forms of arthritis, with osteoarthritis being the most common. Other common forms are rheumatoid, psoriatic, and septic arthritis. I'll discuss them in a later blog.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the result of the bodies adaptation to years of abnormal joint motion. Wofff's law states, in effect, that bone under stress remodels to that stress. Examples show in the arms and shoulders of tennis players, the bones of weight lifters, and martial artists at strike points. The opposite happens in astronauts returning to earth after as little as 2 weeks in space without gravity, they lose bone density as well as muscle mass.
When joints of the spinal column (or any other joint) are not moving as designed, the first signs are instability and inflammation. If ignored, the inflammation becomes chronic and the bones on each side of the joint begin to remodel to help stabilize the joint. The body is smart enough to add calcium to the area to make it stronger and more stable. While this does increase the stability in the area, there are some other effects we don't enjoy, like: limited motion, increased pain with movement, less strength, swelling, aching, and continued degeneration.
The continued degeneration is the key. This means that the OA process is continuing and cumulative, robbing you of comfort, sleep, movement, and the ability to do the things you love to do. No one wants to have arthritis and no one wants it to get worse!
There is an answer! Restore the joints to as near normal movement and alignment as possible and keep them there! Specific Chiropractic care has been proven to decrease the rate of degenerative changes over time.
